Pink Mini Ombre Cakes {Epic Fail}

For Valentine's Day, I wanted to make some mini ombre cakes that I have been pinning on my Pinterest cake board.

I followed the instructions by Baking With Blondie. Everything was going fine, until I tried to take my cakes out of the pan. Apparently, I didn't use enough flour in my pans.  Several of them had sections that stuck to the bottom of the pan.  I also think that I didn't let them cool long enough.

Because of this, I was only able to cut out three little cakes, rather than six, like it's supposed to make. You'll also notice that in the picture, one cake has four layers. That was the first one I put together.  I just plunked it onto the plate thinking I could move it into place after I got the whole thing together, but I couldn't because it stuck to the plate.  I was also apprehensive about spreading on the frosting because my cakes might fall apart. Instead, I just piped the frosting in between the layers which made it really tall and wobbly.

You might notice that two of the cakes only have three layers. This is partly because I didn't feel like I got the middle colors quite right and I didn't want them so tall. Two of the cakes have very dark pink cake on the bottom, but one doesn't.  I accidentally put the wrong cake color on the plate for the last cake, and wasn't able to lift it off to put a dark pink one in it's place. Oh well!

Here's what was behind the scenes in my kitchen.

The mess didn't seem to bother my daughter who tried to sneak off with a plate loaded with cake scraps and frosting.

Ok, I guess maybe "epic fail" is a little harsh.  They are actually kinda pretty and they were very tasty.

I should have known that since this was a Valentine's project, it wouldn't go off without a hitch. Ever since 5th Grade when I broke my wrist in PE, and missed the Valentine's party, I've always had bad luck around Valentine's Day.  When my friends and I were in college, and we didn't have boyfriends, we would declare it "Black Arm Band Day" in protest. Now, I've come to appreciate Valentine's Day for the confection consuming holiday that it was meant to be :)

Happy Valentine's Day!

  1. Well, the ones that turned out certainly turned out pretty!

    I had kind of a fail with my heart-shaped cookies last night. They didn't look as perfect as I wanted them to, but they tasted delicious!

  2. Hi Cindy! Thanks for stopping by. I think the secret is to just eat the ones that didn't turn out as fast as you can. Can't sweat the small stuff :)

  3. I think they still look pretty even though it didn't turn out as you had hoped. I think the piped icing on top looks really pretty. And as long as they taste good, that's what really matters. Happy Single Awareness Day... I mean Valentine's Day. ;) Enjoy your confections.
