Liebster Award

Last week, Julia, at It's Always Reutten, gave me a Liebster Award. Thanks Julia! I had seen the Liebster Award on other blogs, but never knew what it was.

(Meghan at Make Something Daily gets credit for making this fantastic animated award image).

Julia summed up eloquently what a Liebster Award is, "The Liebster Award is given from one up-and-coming blogger to other up-and-coming bloggers in an effort to support and recognize bloggers with less than 200 followers. Liebster is a German term of endearment; so we are expressing our support for one another through this award."

The Rules:
Each blogger needs to:
1. Post 11 random facts about themselves;
2. Answer the 11 questions set out by the person who gave you the award;
3. Choose 11 new bloggers to give the award to and link to them in your post;
4. Create 11 new questions for the newly awarded bloggers to answer;
5. Comment on each newly awarded bloggers blog to let them know about the award; and
6. You cannot tag back the person who awarded you the Liebster Award!

11 Random Facts You Really Never Ever Needed to Know About Me

1. I'm only serious when I have to be (and then it's painful).
2. I used to be a total cat person before we got our dog, Bocce. Now, I love both.
3. Last summer, I got my kids an above ground pool and I hate it. It's a hideous monstrosity in our backyard. It's got to go!
4. I'm a morning person and never set my alarm clock.
5. I'm the youngest of seven kids. Six girls and one boy, who is the oldest (and please don't say, "poor guy!").
6. I curse like a drunken sailor when around certain co-workers (they bring out the best in me).
7. I've been threatening to cancel our basic cable TV for years.
8. I'm 5'9" tall.
9. I have to wear bangs because my forehead is the size of Texas.
10. I get choked up when I hear The Star Spangled Banner.
11. There's nothing worse than a weak cup of coffee.
12. I have a hard time following rules.

My Answers to Julia's Questions

1. Do you live in the same state that you were born in? If yes, do you live in the same town?
No. My dad was in the Air Force so I've lived in Arizona, Phillipines, North Dakota and Italy. Then,we moved here, where my dad retired. I only remember North Dakota and Italy though because I was just a baby when we lived in Arizona and the Phillipines.

2. When you were a kid, what did you want to "be when you grew up?"
I actually wanted to be a writer since I was in second grade.

3. Is your answer to question 2, your occupation now or ever?
I almost majored in Journalism and thought about getting a degree in English, but decided on a degree in Sociology. Now I work in the human service field and have to write, but nothing creative. One of the things I love about blogging is that it combines my love of writing with my love of all things home.

4. What is your dream vacation?
Living in Italy for three years was a dream! My dream vacation would be to go back and rent an Italian villa for a month (or longer) and travel around. I would love to take my kids there someday.

5. What is your favorite charity?
I donate monthly to the Road Runner Food Bank, a local organization that provides food to people in need, and to St. Judes Children's Research Hospital. It breaks my heart to think of anyone in this country going hungry and to see a sick child.

6. What kind of camera do you have?
I use a refurbished Nikon D-40. Honestly though, I have no idea what I'm doing with it. I did get a book on how to use it when I bought it, but it mostly sits in a drawer, unread. I'd like to improve my photography skills.

7. What is your hidden talent?
I make up silly little rhyming songs (I hesitate to call it "rapping") usually about my kids, that I sing to them. When my kids give me attitude, I threaten to sing them in front of their friends. Of course, they live in mortal fear that I might actually do this. It's an effective parenting method that I highly recommend.

8. What do you value most in your life?
My kids, my family, my friends and my dog (oh, yes, I almost forgot, my yoga pants).

9. Do you think painting over wood furniture is okay?
Absolutely! I think you should paint anything you want to. In fact, I tell my kids if they sit still too long in one spot, there's a good chance they'll be painted.

10. Who is your favorite author?
This one is tough because I love to read. Thinking of recent books I've read, I'd have to say Khaled Hosseni, author of The Kite Runner  and A Thousand Splendid Suns.

11. What is the significance of the name of your blog?
I wanted something that reflected that this was a home improvement/DIY blog in the Southwest. Plus, I do love desert willow trees and have two in my yard.
